Installing an Interior Door- Step by Step

Installing an interior door is accomplish-able rather easily if you have the proper tools and the most basic of carpentry experience. Before installing the door you want to

A. Make sure you have the correct swing door for your application. This is referred to as the "hand". This can be confusing, so this is the easiest way to remember; If the in-swing of the door is to your right (hinges on right) it is a "right hand". If the in-swing is to the left (hinges on the left) it is a "left hand" swing. Remember your position should be where you would push the door open.

B. Be sure to have gathered the correct tools and materials. You will find those lists on this page.

C. Be sure to have these instructions handy.

A good many of new doors are manufactured as a "split jamb". This means the door comes apart in the middle of the jamb so there is no need to remove the pre-installed casing trim. If you do not have a split jamb you need to remove the trim casing from one side of the door.

Put the door and jamb in the opening placing the hinge side tight to the wall framing. Be sure the backside of the casing lays flat on the wall. If you have a split jamb, slide the other half of the door in place. Do not remove the door from the frame.

Use your level on the hinge side of the frame to ensure the frame is plumb. Place shims behind frame where necessary to plumb and behind hinges where possible. nail with finish nails where you have shims. Use nail punch to hide heads. Remove the middle screw from each hinge on the jamb side and replace with the 3 inch screws.

Use the level and shims to plumb the latch side of the jamb and attach with the finish nails. Replace casing if necessary.

Install the handle and latch hardware as per the manufacturers directions. You will probably only need a screwdriver or two to complete this part of the task.

CONGRATULATIONS!
